Looking back I think my love of fashion started with my love of handbags - I would always be buying them, I thought I had an obsession! then I realised I wasn't alone and that the majority of us do! So I started to wonder why, what is it about them that makes us willing to spend over £1000 on??
Almost ten years ago now, when Kate moss posed in Longchamp’s AW06 campaign, naked, well of course she was covered up by her Longchamp bag... At that moment she sent everyone a message that clothes now come second, compared to the IT bag. And its true! Who's looking at your outfit if you have a Birkin on the crook of your arm?

Back In the 1920’s, when travel
became popular, there was naturally a huge rise in popularity in luggage,
suitcases, shoe boxes, hat boxes etc... And next came the handbag! As women
gained independence financially and began to commute to their jobs, and even
back then the sales from handbags were phenomal! So maybe we’ve just been born
into it, it’s only natural for us ladies to love them!
However nowadays handbags can cost
more than houses and have waiting lists, such as the Hermes Birkin bag with a
waiting time of approximately 3 years! The most famous design houses with their
‘IT’ bags are to name a few; Louis Vuitton, Chanel, Marc Jacobs, Celine,
Mulberry, Hermes, Gucci, Prada. Whilst the ‘IT’ bags may come and go with
trends, there a few which will stay iconic in the eyes of bag lovers.
The Chanel 2.55, a classic and one of
the most recognisable bags in the world, that’s what an iconic bag needs to be-
instantly recognisable, I’ve chosen one of my favourite bags to explain how
much the history is in the bag DNA. The 2.55 bag is most definitely
recognisable – it was unveiled in February, 1955 (which is how it gets the name
2.55). The bag came about when Coco
began to be frustrated with having to carry her bag a lot, so designed one
where she could free up her hands. The lining’s burgundy colour represents
the colour of the uniforms at the convent where she grew up; there is a
zippered compartment at the inside of the front flap, where Chanel is rumoured
to have stored her love letters in her own bag, The caretakers of the convent
where she grew up held the keys at their waist dangling from the same type of
chains as the 2.55 shoulder strap chains, The bag originally came with a front
lock called “the Mademoiselle Lock” (in reference to Coco Chanel never
marrying). There is a lot of reference to the convent in this bag and it may
symbolize how far she came?
I also think
that it is an investment, and the quality of the craftsmanship is incredible
and should look as good however many years down the line if you look after it! I
absolutely adore my Louis Vuitton Neverfull PM bag, its so useful, beautifully simple and goes with a lot of my outfits I tend to wear autumnal colours as they suit me this bag is perfect its chic and so practical for where ever I'm going. My Mulberry Lily bag I also love, I bought it to wear for the British fashion awards in November as the dress code was Black tie & British so I thought it would fit in! I absolutely am in love with it, I've always loved Mulberry as a brand as its simple, understated and the quality is impeccable and
its also been a brand that we've all seen grow in the last 5 years and become so iconic! I will continue to save in my designer bag piggy bank and I hope I've persuaded you to! ;)
Have a peek into my bag wish list...
1.
Givenchy Small ‘Antigona’ Tote £1,250.00
I love this Givenchy bag because
it’ a perfect everyday shape, it is structured and elegant, and I love the
smooth leather, it does come in grain leather as well but I much prefer the
smooth leather it gives a more polished look. Givenchy is always elegant but
not always overly feminine and that’s why I love them. The Antigona is finished
with beautiful silver tone hardware, made of pure leather and made in Italy.
2. Céline Luggage Tote
Céline brought
the luggage tote out in 2010, at first it was readily available in-stores you
could buy them online, and all of a sudden it changed, certain sizes have been
discontinued prices have nearly doubled and new materials and colours
introduced. I love the solid colour leather one its classic and simple and
striking with the dagger like lines and shapes and thats what you see its pure
beautiful design. The materials used are
beautiful and include ; smooth calf, bullhide calf, drummed calf, Calf and textile,
Nubuck calf, Textile, Calf hair, grained calf, crocodile, python, croc embossed
and palmelato calf.
3. Louis Vuitton Noé BB
The beautiful designed Noé bucket bag, created in 1932, When Louis Vuitton was asked by a champagne producer to develop a sturdy bag that he could carry at least 5 bottles of champagne in, this is when Gaston-Louis Vuitton designed the classic Noé. The classic shape has been cloned in this miniature format. this bag is just under 9 inches in height. I love this bag, I love mixing designer labels with vintage or high street labels so to me this bag is a perfect mix of casual and chic.
